Nuovo – Sarah Point – Ancoats

Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, North West,

Sarah Point was meant to be a residential development consisting of 166 apartments in Ancoats in Manchester. The project was abandoned when property developer Basahr Issa went bankrupt owing £39m. In 2011 the site was acquired by UK Land and Planning who renamed the scheme Nuovo and they received a £2.5m grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The project was meant to be finished towards the end of 2012 but shortly after starting the redevelopment, UKLP stopped work due to escalating costs. The building has been sat abandoned ever since. This is a prime site which could be transformed into apartments and commercial space yet it is just an eyesore in Ancoats. Do something about it!

One Response to “Nuovo – Sarah Point – Ancoats”

  1. iwannabeadored says:

In May 2011 there was much ado nothing when UK Land & Property took over the site.

Steve Thorncroft, deputy chief executive for New East Manchester, said:
“Nuovo is a significant piece of the regeneration of East Manchester and will continue to transform the look of Ancoats into an area where people can live, work and enjoy what this unique part of the city centre brings.”

Deborah McLaughlin of the Homes & Communities Agency said:
“Sarah Point was a redundant project but Nuovo is set to bring fantastic new homes, including shared ownership options, right to the heart of the city.”

ANd THEN an article in Manchester Evening News in July 2012 said that work was meant to start within weeks:

A UKLP spokesman said: “All parties are still actively engaged in working towards completion of contract to allow works to restart on site late summer.”

AND THEN an article in November 26th in the MEN says that work will begin in January 2013.

David Chilton, head of area for Greater Manchester at the HCA, said: “The Nuovo scheme remains a key priority for the HCA and we’re working closely with partners to agree a new funding package that will kickstart the redevelopment of the site.

“Nuovo is a landmark building that will provide much needed new homes for local people and support the continued revival of Ancoats and we’re hopeful that work will start on site in the new year.”

Stop fobbing us off and do something about the building rather than make false promises.
